RCAFA 441 Huronia Wing President Bill Sergeant receives Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers

by Peter Levedag

RCAFA 441 Huronia Wing Chairman and Barrie Veterans Club Communications Director Bill Sergeant has been awarded The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers.  The presentation to Bill was made by Barrie Mayor Jeff Lehman during a city council meeting at Barrie city hall on Nov 25th

Former Barrie town councillor and 441 Wing member Rob Warman read the accompanying citation which listed a worthy and remarkable list of volunteer activities performed by Bill both here in Barrie and internationally.

As an official Canadian honour, the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers pays tribute to the dedication and exemplary commitment of volunteers.  The Medal is a national award that acknowledges the exceptional volunteer achievements of living Canadians from across the country in a wide range of fields who have made a significant, sustained, and unpaid contribution to their community, in Canada or abroad.  It is the highest honour for volunteer service that an individual can receive within the Canadian Honours System.

There can be no more suitable recipient than Bill Sergeant.

Approximately 20 members of the Royal Canadian Air Force Association 441 Huronia Wing and the Veterans Club of Barrie attended the ceremony to honour Bill along with Bill’s wife Monika and daughter LeeAnne, Barrie-Innisfil MP John Brassard and his wife Liane and former Barrie Mayor Janice Laking.

Following the presentation and congratulatory remarks by Mayor Lehman, Bill was given a standing ovation by all present in the Council Chambers.

This is an extremely well deserved honour that has made us all proud and very pleased.

Congratulations Bill.
